The bummer is that it hasn’t really gotten interesting until now that it’s dark. Going to be an interesting evening.

So it looks like we’re going to get clobbered by Sandy… let’s hope we’re all prepared.

Google recently put together a crisis map that lets you keep an eye on the progress of Hurricane Sandy. This interactive map lets you see the three day forecast for places you click on the map as well as videos and links to webcams along the affected path of Hurricane Sandy.

WPGeocode 1.0.8 Brings Postal Code Recognition to Geomarketing Intelligence

Leverage Postal Code to Customize Your Content
Leverage Postal Code to Customize Your Content
I recently released another update to the WPGeocode to enable WordPress users to leverage additional geolocation data in their blog posts and pages. Postal codes may now be incorporated into the content of posts and pages using the shortcode [wpgc_postal_code]. For example, the postal code from which you’re computer is connected to the internet is ~.

Additional conditional shortcodes enable publishers to create customized content blocks in their posts or pages that will be displayed only to those visitors of their web site viewing from certain postal codes. For example, if you are in currently reading this from United States or Canada, you will see a customized message in the paragraph below.

Hello and welcome to the site. I see that you’re coming in from somewhere near Ashburn, VA.

Since you’re in United States, we can even build links to custom data sources – like your own government officials, or weather data:

To understand how this is possible, let’s look at the source of this article – without translating the WPGeocode shortcodes to their data values. One thing to note that the following block is the source of this article. It is what I typed into the wordpress “Add New Post” text box. Also note that to prevent wordpress and WPGeocode from translating the shortcodes into their geocoded values, I’ve inserted spaces between the left and right brackets ([,&#93). If you want to cut / copy and paste this example, be sure to remove the spaces before the ] and after the [.
[ wpgc_is_country_codes country_codes="US,CA" ]

Hello and welcome to the site. I see that you’re coming in from somewhere near [ wpgc_city ], [ wpgc_state_code ].

Since you’re in [ wpgc_country_name ], we can even build links to custom data sources – like your own government officials, or weather data:
<li><a target="_new" href=[ wpgc_postal_code ]>Who’s Your Representative?</a>
<li><a target="_new" href=[ wpgc_postal_code ]>What’s the weather like in [ wpgc_city ]?</a>
<li><a target="_new" href=[ wpgc_postal_code ]&cobrand=mywebmd&baseurl=</a>How about the pollen count?</a>
[/ wpgc_is_country_codes ] [ wpgc_is_not_country_codes country_codes="US,CA" ]

Sorry, the content I have prepared is not available for [ wpgc_country_name ]. I can, however give you some data about your specific country…

<li><a target="_new" href=[ wpgc_country_code ]>[ wpgc_country_code ]</a>

[/wpgc_is_not_country_codes]
So as you can see, with WPGeocode, you can create completely customized content based on the location of your readers. Visit WPGeocode Home or WordPress WPGeocode Download for more information or to download the latest version of the plugin.
